Thoughts about E3 2009

Posted in Game Related, PC, PS3, Xbox360 with tags , , , , , , , on June 10, 2009 by blair0

monkey-thinkingIt’s taken me a few days to pour through all the information from e3 2009. Needless to say it was an impressive show! Apparently the organizers got the balance just right this year – not too big, but not too small. Plus the presentations focused on entertainment not boring numbers and sales stats. I hope it will be the same again next year!

Here is the list of games I was most impressed with that showed actual gameplay:

* Uncharted 2 – Loved the building collapse. Game of the show for me.
* God of War III – Looks to be the same great game with with next-gen polish and even more epicness.
* Assassins Creed 2 – The developers stated they are focused on bringing more variety and better missions than the last game 🙂
* Splinter Cell – Bringing a slew of original new gameplay elements to the stealth action genre.
* Modern Warfare 2 – The snow level looked absolutely stunning.
* Mass Effect 2 – Not much gameplay shown but the trailer looked awesome!
* Alan Wake – Impressive lighting.

Best cinematic trailer:

* StarWars: Old Republic – I’ve heard commentators say this clip is better than all the prequels. I almost agree!

Motion control:

All the hype was for motion control this E3 and it is easy to get excited about the prospect of running around in games like Oblivion unleashing fireballs, swinging swords, firing arrows and picking up items via motion control…. but I’m not buying into it yet. It needs to be a significantly better experience than using a standard controller otherwise it is just a novelty that soon wears off. I have no doubt it will be massively popular with the casual audience as the Wii has proven to be, but I’m still unconvinced that it is the best way to control AAA hardcore titles like God of War, Grand Theft Auto, etc. Still, all it would take is just one killer app to change my mind. Sony mentioned their solution could easily control RTS games which blipped my radar (Blizzard games for PS3!?). If it does become the preferred way to play games it’s going to be harder for developers to release multi-platform games because each of the platforms technology is quite different.

* Dragon Age – It didn’t bring anything new to the table for e3 but I’m still looking forward to it.
* OnLive – No show
* Lack of PC games coverage

Bring on the zombie hoard!! Arggg!!

Capcom are talking up their next zombie game saying that it will feature the most ever on screen characters of any game ever! A whopping 6000?? Sounds a tad over the top?? You would need a nuke to deal with that many at once?! 😀

Riddick: A movie-based game that’s actually good?!

Posted in PC, PS3, Xbox360 with tags , , , , , on March 16, 2009 by blair0

I missed playing The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay when it came out on the original xbox back in 2004. It was rated as one of the very best single player experiences on the xbox and was only marked down for being a tad too short and having no multi-player. It was released just before (and was probably overshadowed by the hype surrounding) Halo 2. I saw it in a bargain bin at Kmart for about $20 after the 360 came out and have been kicking myself that I didn’t get it. Thankfully Starbreeze have decided to add the original game in with the upcoming release of Assault On Dark Athena, the next chapter in the story, so it’s two games for the price of one 😉 That’s almost Orange Box style value! although I think both games are each only about ten hours long. EFBB has also been given the full upgrade for this-gen consoles, with updated character models, textures, etc. I downloaded the new demo, which is pretty short but it gives a good feeling of the atmosphere of the game and I suppose it’s done it’s job because I’m getting really interested in this game again! I really love the gritty sci-fi universe that Riddick inhabits and from what I can tell from playing the demo and watching trailers, the spectacular production values, voice acting and story mean, gamers will be able to fully immerse themselves once again when The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault On Dark Athena ships next month 🙂

13 Scariest Games of This Generation

Posted in Game Related, PS3, Xbox360 with tags , , , , , , on February 13, 2009 by phyzznick

Found this when I was looking at the 360 game Condemned. Coz im getting Condemned 2 and found the original on trademe cheapish I thought it could be an option to play thru the story a bit more, as Guido did with Resistance. Both have scored between 8.0(No.2) and 8.7(No.1) respectively on IGN.
This list was done by the IGN staff but was under the IGN>Games>Xbox360>Features so may not include PS3 exclusives, someone in the blog under it stated Resistance: Fall of Man should be on the list instead of Gears of War.

13. Gears of War
12: Clive Barker’s Jericho
11: Manhunt 2
10: Condemned 2:Bloodshot
9:: Resident Evil 4
8: BioShock
7: DeadSpace
6: Siren: BloodCurse
5: F.E.A.R
4: Penumbra: Black Plague
3: Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corner of the Earth
2: S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl
1: Condemned: Criminal Origins

The Witcher? Its in the picture!

Posted in Game Related, PC, PS3, Xbox360 with tags , , , , on February 4, 2009 by phyzznick

Well I have to say I do love a good RPG, after all it is my favorite genre!
Well upon looking at a list of the up-and-coming on the 360 I found 2 games, one called “Risen” but theres not alot about this yet except basic plot and a few screenshots which do look a bit myst-like but impressive.
But the other game in the list due to come out Q4 2009 is a game called “The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf”. This game is apparently a remake for the new generation consoles 360 and PS3 that is based directly from the PC multi award-winning million-selling 2007 RPG of the year game ‘The Witcher’…. Well holy shitface mother duck WTF? was I living in a cave? coz ive never heard of this game? maybe because i had my head buried up WoW’s ass lol who knows!
Not many screenies out yet , about 5 at teamxbox and 9 at IGN but 3-4 there are just artworks, but theres a movie that im yet to watch, Will do when Im done here and comment on it later.
Anyway Im always glad to see decent looking RPGs coming out for the consoles, its what will keep me going in between some of the exclusives ie Gears of War 3! “Yeah! Wooo! Bring it on, sucka! This is my kinda shit!” ~Cole
The Witcher looks interesting, like a Fable 2 in a way with harder graphics, well less cartoony anyway. And the story must be good! Hey it won awards! :oS
Heres some screens! Time for me to watch the vid!

Graphics Whore? Moi?

Posted in Game Related, PC, PS3, Xbox360 with tags , , , on February 2, 2009 by guid0

I’m not really a graphics whore as such, I own a Wii for feck sakes, that should be proof enough 😉 but I do appreciate good graphics when I see them and there’s been an amazing line up of exceptional games with astoundingly good graphics lately so I thought I’d chuck together a quick side by side of what’s probably the best that each system has to offer at the moment along with the up and coming Killzone which is said to be up there with the best of the best. A recent gaming blog stated that the top three club has Crysis on the PC, Gears of War 2 on the Xbox360 and now Killzone on the PS3 as it’s members. I would have to add Resistance 2 into the mix making it the current PS3 pick soon to be dethroned.

I’ve tried to pick as similar screen shots as possible, showing character models up close, for as fair a comparison as possible. What do you think? What immediately became obvious to me was how far console gaming has come. The PC is struggling to keep up! Here’s the line up in no particular order…
