Graphics Whore? Moi?

I’m not really a graphics whore as such, I own a Wii for feck sakes, that should be proof enough 😉 but I do appreciate good graphics when I see them and there’s been an amazing line up of exceptional games with astoundingly good graphics lately so I thought I’d chuck together a quick side by side of what’s probably the best that each system has to offer at the moment along with the up and coming Killzone which is said to be up there with the best of the best. A recent gaming blog stated that the top three club has Crysis on the PC, Gears of War 2 on the Xbox360 and now Killzone on the PS3 as it’s members. I would have to add Resistance 2 into the mix making it the current PS3 pick soon to be dethroned.

I’ve tried to pick as similar screen shots as possible, showing character models up close, for as fair a comparison as possible. What do you think? What immediately became obvious to me was how far console gaming has come. The PC is struggling to keep up! Here’s the line up in no particular order…

While we are on the graphics discussion….
Ive got some interesting screenshots I was going to upload, dunno if you’d like them, I was very surprised myself.
    xbox360 vs PS3 screenshots
Im sure you’ve seen many but i was surprised at the difference of graphics really, basically the 360 was alot better to put a long story short, im not saying all games because I did see a few ie NHL07 where the PS3 was definitely better. May just be how well the game uses the hardware given.

Also saw screenshot of blu-ray vs dvd, and man i cant believe the diff there also, was like comparing DVD to VHS.

Read a blog that discussed the PS3 vs the 360 and it was quite interesting, basically said PS3 was setup more towards video(DVD/Bluray) playback, on account of some numbers lil me dont understand (maybe something about the bandwidth?!)
Ill fish this blog out and link it… maybe In a new post?
May make for a good discussion or …bad argument? lol

  2. I think I read those same blogs. There were differences for sure but basically it often comes down to which is the lead platform ie was it an XBox game then shifted over to the PS3 or the other way around. Also it takes time to get the most out of a system, devs need to learn the ropes and in that instance Xbox had a year lead on PS3 (much more when you consider it was based on PC architecture) but at the end of the day those differences were (mostly) so subtle you needed a side by side to really appreciate the difference. For my comparisons I chose games that weren’t cross platform on purpose because then they are more likely to be games tailored to that systems strengths. Only then do you see what each system is really capable of and what it’s strengths are. But at the end of the day, unless the difference is massive and and clearly obvious, like massive pop up or much lower poly models then you’re not gonna see them when in the heat of the battle. Can’t wait to see what Killzone looks like and I forgot to add MGS4 to the post although it’s a more stylised look. Also God of War will be another great looking game, as will the next Drakes Fortune and don’t forget Bioshock and Final Fantasy XIII, so many amazing looking games and they even have great gameplay to boot!!

  3. …and as Sony and Microsoft battle it out for graphical supremacy it’s Nintendo that is making the billions and selling the most games by FAR!! They must laugh themselves to sleep every damn night of the week!! Did you hear they sold over 14 million Wii Fits?!? Fot the WUK?!?! 😀 They’re like $200 a pop?!

  4. I couldnt agree with you more on the above points ie graphics.
But i wouldnt say the side-by-sides were subtle however, they were more dramatic than i thought, ie lower textures/poly models. But as I think i said, and i agree with you its basically always going to be better on the lead platform it was coded for and how it makes use of the hardware.
Some that I saw were alot more detailed with it textures, lighting and shadows etc on the 360, but then I saw a NHL one and there was no comparison w that one being the ps3s one was amazing and the 360 dull looking.
Guess as you said ur best to go for the platform that has the exclusives u want to play.

As for nintendo its almost 2 different markets going on here and they have a monopoly on one of them. I dont think anybody generally could have believed there was this much of a massive “family” gaming market.
As for me well I must be a hardcore gaming graphics whore coz the Wii just did nothing for me in the end. Its just a brick/paperweight on my entertainment system lol.
